Most Denver homeowners discover their DuraFlex damper has failed on the first cold morning in October, when they open the fireplace and find the damper plate stuck shut, or worse, they smell smoke backing into the living room because the plate won’t seat tight. In older Park Hill homes and the brick bungalows around Berkeley, we also see corrosion from decades of Denver’s freeze-thaw cycling and the alkaline dust that blows off the Front Range.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex dampers fall into two main families: the DuraFlex SW (smooth wall, 4″ to 6″ diameters) and the DuraFlex Pro (corrugated, 3″ to 8″ diameters). The SW series uses a slightly narrower damper body with a flat silicone gasket; the Pro series takes a corrugated gasket that seats into the ridges. Mix them and you’ll have a draft leak you can feel from across the room.

To identify yours, look for the stamped DuraVent label on the damper frame, usually on the handle side. If the label’s burned off, measure the flue diameter at the top of the firebox and note whether the liner wall is smooth or corrugated. Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle spins freely but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin inside the DuraFlex damper frame has sheared or the worm gear has stripped. This is the most common failure we see in Denver homes built between 1985 and 2005, where the original zinc-plated pins have corroded through.
• You feel cold air dropping even when the damper is “closed.” The silicone gasket has hardened or the plate has warped from heat cycling. In Denver’s dry climate, gasket life runs 8-12 years, shorter than the 15-year average in humid regions.
• The plate opens but won’t stay open; it drifts shut under its own weight. The tension spring has lost its set or the spring anchor has cracked. DuraFlex Pro springs are particularly prone to this after about a decade of Front Range temperature swings.
• Smoke spills into the room during a fire. The damper plate is obstructing the flue throat, either from creosote buildup on the underside or because the plate has slipped off its pivot. This one we check with the camera before we quote anything.
• Rust flakes or black debris fall when you operate the handle. The damper frame is corroding from the inside, usually where condensation collects at the flue collar joint. In Denver’s altitude, combustion byproducts cool faster and condense more readily, so we see this earlier than sea-level manuals suggest.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s exactly one safe DIY check: with the fireplace cold and no embers, open the damper fully and shine a flashlight up to confirm the plate moves and seats. That’s it.

Everything else belongs to a trained technician. The tension spring in a DuraFlex damper is under significant load; if it releases during handling, it can lacerate a hand or launch the plate into the firebox. More critically, the damper sits at the transition between conditioned space and the flue liner. A misaligned replacement creates a gap that draws heated air out continuously, or worse, allows combustion gases to spill into the home. We’ve found CO readings above ambient in homes where a DIY damper swap left a 3/16″ gap at the collar. We don’t give step-by-step replacement instructions for this part.
