The label is stamped on the underside of the mesh skirt or on a small tag at the crown edge, though after five Colorado winters that tag is often illegible. • Rust staining down the chimney face. Gelco’s galvanized caps use a zinc coating that degrades faster in Denver’s semi-arid, high-UV environment than in humid climates. Once the coating fails at the weld seams, rust runs down the brick and etches the mortar. We see this most on south-facing caps above 5,300 feet where UV exposure is most intense.
• Mesh screen pulling away from the frame. The spot-welds between the mesh and the cap skirt fatigue from thermal cycling - hot flue gases below, freezing air above. • Cap sitting askew or missing after wind. Gelco caps rely on tension-fit legs or masonry screws into the crown. Crown deterioration, not cap failure, is often the real culprit. A cap that blows off repeatedly usually means the crown surface is spalling and can’t hold a mechanical anchor.
• Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. The cap’s primary job is to shed water before it enters the flue. If the lid is dented from hail or the seam weld has cracked, water runs straight down. Denver’s spring storms often deliver the final blow to caps that were already fatigued.
• Visible gaps between cap and flue tile. The legs can bend from repeated heating and cooling, or from a previous installer forcing an oversized cap. Gaps larger than 3/8 inch let in enough blowing snow to create freeze-thaw damage inside the flue liner.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things from the ground or a stable ladder: whether the cap is centered over the flue, whether the mesh has visible gaps, and whether rust is running down the chimney face. Use binoculars if needed. Do not climb onto the roof to tug on the cap or attempt removal yourself - the combination of steep pitches, ice, and the need to lean over the flue edge makes this a significant fall risk. We do not recommend DIY cap installation. The tension legs on Gelco-style caps require simultaneous downward pressure and inward squeeze to seat properly; done wrong, the cap launches off the roof or the leg punctures the flue tile. Crown anchoring requires a hammer drill with masonry bits and proper fall protection.
