• Smoke backdraft on startup. The damper plate is warped or the frame has sagged, leaving a gap even when the handle reads “closed.” In Denver’s dry climate, the thin steel plates on 100 Series units heat-cycle faster and bow more readily than the cast iron they replaced.
• Cold downdraft when the fireplace is off. The gasket has hardened or the frame seal has corroded. ProSeal gaskets last roughly 8-12 years in Colorado’s UV and freeze-thaw exposure; above 6,000 feet in the foothills, the silicone degrades faster.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check you can do from the hearth: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for the damper plate position. If it’s clearly open or clearly closed and the handle matches, the linkage may be intact. But the actual repair involves working at height over the firebox, handling a 15-25 pound steel frame in a confined space, and re-anchoring into firebrick that may be compromised. A dropped damper frame can crack the lintel or damage the flue liner, and a misaligned throat damper leaks carbon monoxide into the living space during operation.
