Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Denver Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney caps across Denver, with most residential replacements running $340-$580 installed, including removal of the failed unit, flue measurement, and proper securing for wind loads up to 110 mph. For standard single-flue Gelco models in neighborhoods like Wash Park or Congress Park, we typically have matching inventory on the truck and can complete the swap in one visit. You’ll usually discover the cap has failed when you find rust flakes in the firebox, hear it rattling loose in a March windstorm, or notice water stains on the ceiling beneath the chimney chase after a spring snow.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco caps break down into three main series you’ll see on Denver roofs: the standard single-flue galvanized caps (model prefixes GS- and GSC-), the stainless multi-flue caps (prefixes MSS- and MS-), and the copper architectural line. The label is stamped on the underside of the mesh skirt or on a small tag at the crown edge, though after five Colorado winters that tag is often illegible. We carry a sizing template set for Gelco’s standard flue dimensions - 8×8, 8×12, 12×12, and the less common 13×13 - but the critical measurement is your flue’s outside dimension, not the cap’s nominal size.
Here’s where owners get stuck: Gelco changed its leg-clip design around 2014. The pre-2014 caps use a straight tension-leg that slides inside the flue tile; post-2014 models use an angled leg with a set-screw collar. A new cap with the wrong leg geometry will sit crooked or blow off in the first Chinook wind. We stock both leg styles and verify the flue tile condition before quoting, because a cracked tile lip won’t hold either design. For Denver’s freeze-thaw cycles, we generally recommend stainless over galvanized unless the existing cap lasted ten-plus years in good shape. We source Gelco, Olympia Chimney, and Famco caps through Haven’s buying network, which lets us match OEM specs without OEM markup on most jobs.
Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

- Rust staining down the chimney face. Gelco’s galvanized caps use a zinc coating that degrades faster in Denver’s semi-arid, high-UV environment than in humid climates. Once the coating fails at the weld seams, rust runs down the brick and etches the mortar. We see this most on south-facing caps above 5,300 feet where UV exposure is most intense.
- Mesh screen pulling away from the frame. The spot-welds between the mesh and the cap skirt fatigue from thermal cycling - hot flue gases below, freezing air above. When the mesh gaps, squirrels and starlings access the flue. In Park Hill and Stapleton, we’ve pulled nests from caps where the mesh failed after six winters.
- Cap sitting askew or missing after wind. Gelco caps rely on tension-fit legs or masonry screws into the crown. Crown deterioration, not cap failure, is often the real culprit. A cap that blows off repeatedly usually means the crown surface is spalling and can’t hold a mechanical anchor.
- Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. The cap’s primary job is to shed water before it enters the flue. If the lid is dented from hail or the seam weld has cracked, water runs straight down. Denver’s spring storms often deliver the final blow to caps that were already fatigued.
- Visible gaps between cap and flue tile. The legs can bend from repeated heating and cooling, or from a previous installer forcing an oversized cap. Gaps larger than 3/8 inch let in enough blowing snow to create freeze-thaw damage inside the flue liner.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service Component | Price Range (Denver) |
|---|---|
| Standard single-flue Gelco-compatible cap, stainless | $340-$420 |
| Multi-flue Gelco-compatible cap, stainless | $460-$580 |
| Crown surface repair (if needed for anchor integrity) | $180-$340 additional |
| Flue tile repair or rebuild (if tile lip is cracked) | $280-$520 additional |
The installed price includes removal and disposal of the old cap, flue measurement and leg-fit verification, installation with stainless hardware, and a camera inspection of the flue top to confirm no debris or damage was introduced. We deliver a written price before any work starts, as required by Haven Standard Clause 1. Every cap installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. Materials come through Haven’s buying network - we stock Gelco, Olympia Chimney, and Famco caps specifically to keep replacement costs honest without chasing OEM-only pricing.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things from the ground or a stable ladder: whether the cap is centered over the flue, whether the mesh has visible gaps, and whether rust is running down the chimney face. Use binoculars if needed. Do not climb onto the roof to tug on the cap or attempt removal yourself - the combination of steep pitches, ice, and the need to lean over the flue edge makes this a significant fall risk. We do not recommend DIY cap installation. The tension legs on Gelco-style caps require simultaneous downward pressure and inward squeeze to seat properly; done wrong, the cap launches off the roof or the leg punctures the flue tile. Crown anchoring requires a hammer drill with masonry bits and proper fall protection. We’ve been called to retrieve caps that homeowners installed upside-down, with the mesh trapping moisture against the flue instead of venting it. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we. Call (720) 674-7312 and we’ll measure, match, and install it in one trip.
FAQs
A galvanized Gelco cap typically lasts 7-10 years in Denver’s UV and freeze-thaw environment; stainless models run 15-20 years if the crown beneath them stays sound. The mesh welds usually fail before the lid itself. Call (720) 674-7312 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Minor mesh re-welding is possible, but in practice the labor exceeds replacement cost and the weld never matches factory corrosion resistance. We recommend replacement for any cap with structural failure. Call (720) 674-7312 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Most Gelco cap replacements take 45-90 minutes on site, assuming the flue tile and crown are intact. If crown repair is needed, we schedule a return visit so the masonry cures properly. Call (720) 674-7312 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
We carry stainless single-flue and multi-flue caps in the four most common Gelco sizes on every service truck. Odd sizes or copper finishes typically arrive within two business days through Haven’s supplier network. Call (720) 674-7312 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Level Two Chimney Denver is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Gelco. We also stock and install caps and components from DuraFlex, HeatShield, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield.
